Ghost loads, stacked markups, and why direct terms matter

For box trucks, hotshots, and owner-operators who are tired of chasing posts that never existed—and shippers who are tired of paying layers they never see.

Honest limit: This guide explains incentives and example math. It is not a guarantee of rates, load volume, or savings on every haul. Always verify people, authority, insurance, and freight yourself.

Short answer

A ghost load is a listing that is fake, already booked, duplicated, or never available when you call. Free-to-post boards make ghosts cheap to create. Stacked brokerage can also pull multiple cuts out of the same move. A marketplace that charges for posting and bidding, but does not take a booking commission on the rate you agree, is trying a different trade: pay for access and clearer terms instead of paying a cut of every haul.

What is a ghost load?

In practice, drivers mean one or more of these:

  • The freight was never real (bait to collect capacity or data).
  • It was booked hours ago but never taken down.
  • It was reposted under several accounts or boards.
  • Key details (weight, access, appointment, payment) change when you call—or the phone never answers.

Ghosts cost fuel, hours, and patience. Use a before-you-call checklist before you deadhead for a sketchy post.

Why free posting creates noise

If it costs nothing to post a load, it costs nothing to post a bad one. That does not mean every free board is useless—or that paid boards are pure. It means the incentive is different. When shippers pay a modest monthly fee to post, throwaway accounts and pure spam become more expensive. Drivers who only pay when they bid are less likely to be pure scrapers and more likely to be people building a work history.

On Relocation Manager USA: shippers pay to post ($9.99/mo); drivers can browse free and pay to bid ($29.99+). See live pricing.

Stacked markups: the “year of access on one load” idea

Many hauls pass through more than one intermediary. Each layer can take a cut for arranging, covering, or re-brokering. Sometimes that is fair compensation for real work. Sometimes the driver and the shipper both feel the squeeze and neither sees who took what.

Example math only (not a promise):

  • Shipper budget for a regional box-truck move: $1,200 all-in.
  • After two layers of markups or cover, the truck might see $900–$1,000—or less—while the shipper still paid $1,200.
  • A $200–$300 gap that stays with the parties can exceed a full year of a $29.99 driver plan (~$360) or many months of a $9.99 shipper plan.

Real numbers depend on lane, freight, risk, timing, and negotiation. The point of the example is the shape of the economics: one cleaner direct deal can matter more than the monthly fee if you actually get good terms and the load is real.

Direct marketplace vs “we arrange your move”

A listing platform that lets shippers post details and carriers bid is not the same as a company that books freight as a broker. Relocation Manager USA is built as a marketplace and coordination platform: you set terms with the other party; the platform charges access; it does not add a booking commission on the agreed rate. You still verify DOT/MC, insurance, freight, and payment. Start with the free Safety Center.

What to do this week (practical)

  1. Run the free before-you-call checklist on any load you almost chase.
  2. Price a lane with the free rate calculator so you know your floor before you bid.
  3. If you ship: post one complete pickup (equipment, window, access, target rate or open bids).
  4. If you drive: browse open loads free; only pay when you are ready to bid with real authority and insurance in order.
  5. Never wire money or release freight based on a badge alone—use official records.
